2001 - 2002: MSc. Applied Marine Science. University of Plymouth, Plymouth.

Dissertation: An investigation into the effects of Tributyltin (TBT) on population structure in dogwhelks Nucella lapillus and periwinkles Littorina littorea in the Thames Estuary and Yell Sound, Shetland.

1996 - 2000: BSc. (Hons.) Applied Biology (Environmental Biology). De Montfort University, Leicester.

Graduated with First Class Honours.

Dissertation: An investigation of the diet of the Cormorant Phalocrocorax carbo in Shetland, by analysis of regurgitates.

WORK/FIELD WORK EXPERIENCE.


April 2006 - Present: Working for BirdWatch Ireland as Corncrake Fieldworker, monitoring Corncrakes in the Shannon Callows, Co. Offaly. Duties include school presentations, monitoring of birds and enforcing Corncrake Grant Scheme regulations. A data set of farmers within the CGS were built and retrospective payments were calculated for introduction of the new National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Farm Plan Scheme (FPS). Farmers were approached individually and invited to join the scheme, and the new regulations were monitored. Mowing activities were observed and advice given. Additional research currently includes assisting on 2 Constant Effort Ringing Sites (CES), and Dipper, Cinclus cinclus, nest-monitoring and ringing. I am also additionally assisting the Barn Owl Project in territory location and nest box erection for Barn Owls.

2004 - 2nd January, 2006: Freelance Research Scientist, as ornithologist, field researcher. Work included invertebrate core-sampling, fresh-water invertebrate sampling, over-wintering and breeding-bird surveys.

May 2004 - August 2005: Volunteer bird-recorder, monitoring the first breeding attempts of Egrets in Clonakilty, as a part of the Nest Record Scheme.

October, 2003 - 2nd January, 2006: Volunteer bird-recorder, IWeBS. Assisting in monthly bird-counts in Clonakilty and Inchydoney Bay, Co. Cork.

November, 2003 - 2nd January, 2006. Volunteer researcher. Ringing birds at the Clogheen Marsh Ringing-site, Clonakilty, on behalf of Duchás, National Parks and Wildlife Service and British Trust for Ornithology.

March 2003 - August 2003: Field Researcher, RSPB, based in Leicester, studying nesting success and the mitigating factors in hedgerow quality relating to predation by corvids. Included Common and Breeding Bird Surveys, nest-finding and monitoring.

May 2003 - August 2003: CES Ringer, Rutland Water. Bird-ringing in a reed-bed habitat, under the Constant Effort Site protocol. Additionally included herons, sand and house-martins.

August 2002 - January, 2003: Research Assistant to Kate Vincent (PhD. student studying the decline of the House Sparrow). Assisting in capture and colour-ringing of House Sparrow and field re-sighting of colour-ringed birds.

July 2002. Ecological Studies in the Maritime Approaches to the Shetland Oil Terminal (as in 1997), including Rocky Shoreline Surveys, monitoring work under contract to RSPB, SOTEAG and others. Studies included: Littoral studies; bird population surveys; survey of Red-throated Diver, breeding and predation; bird ringing, and field sampling and analysis of imposex in dogwhelk. Island population studies were completed using. Rigid Inflatable-hull Boats, RHIBs).

November 2000 - August 2001: Acting Manager and Biological Data Inputter, Shetland Biological Records Centre. Work comprised both field and office duties including data input and analysis. Surveys were conducted on breeding bird populations and schedule one protected birds; Merlin and Red-throated Diver. Surveys involving the local schools and general public were planned, produced, analysed and published in the local press.

August - September 2000: Volunteer Warden at Fair Isle Bird Observatory, Fair Isle, Shetland, assisting in the maintenance of the observatory, observatory records and in bird census and bird ringing.

June - October, 2000: Volunteer work in Shetland. Work included; breeding seabird censuses for Seabird 2000, meadow bird surveys and various ornithological studies on behalf of the British Trust for Ornithology and Scottish National Heritage. Surveys were conducted on schedule one protected birds; Merlin and Red-throated Diver. Cliff-breeding birds were monitored, ringed and biometrics recorded, including auks, Kittiwake and Cormorant. Sea cliffs and stacks were visited using Rigid Inflatable-hull, Boats (RHIBs). Great Skua colonies were monitored and birds were ringed.

August 1998 - August 1999: Assistant Warden at Sandscale Hawes NNR (SSSI), a National Trust sand-dune nature reserve (undertaken as my "sandwich placement" year of my B.Sc. programme). Responsibilities included Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease survey and surveys of grasslands, meadows, together with censuses of bird, newt, and Natterjack Toad populations. Education and interpretation programs included school visits and guided tours.
